Whether you’re an experienced prepper or a non-prepper, the tips below will help you start your preparedness journey. (h/t to MDEM.Maryland.gov)
Before disaster strikes, research which hazards are common in your area. Are tornadoes common? What about earthquakes?
Try to find out what natural or man-made disasters pose a risk for you and your family.
Once you confirm these details, take the necessary steps to ensure your home can withstand natural disasters. If this isn’t possible, secure a safe bug-out location and make preparations to drive to this location when it’s no longer safe to stay at home.
Your family needs an emergency preparedness plan so everyone knows where you can all meet if you need to evacuate.
The plan should also include important details such as an out-of-state “family contact,” how to get emergency information in your community and how to take care of any family pets.
Once your emergency preparedness plan has been finalized, you should also set aside some time to run emergency drills with the whole family. This is important because it will teach everyone the designated spot they should go to after an emergency like a fire or an earthquake.
Your whole family should know how to respond during different emergencies. And if the whole family needs to evacuate, they should know the proper evacuation procedures and routes. (Related: How to build a financial preparedness plan before SHTF.)
Depending on their ages, you can talk to your children about what the common risks are and what your family will do if disaster strikes.
If they are older, you can also teach them useful survival skills like firestarting or knot-tying. Older kids can also learn how to cook without electricity, how to signal for help, or how to care for minor wounds.
You can also get your children to help while you restock your survival stockpile, which should have staples such as:
Don’t forget to prep for infants, seniors and other family members with special needs.
Stock up on supplies they might need such as diapers, baby formula, or prescription medication.
Before SHTF, get trained in basic first aid and CPR. Your training could save the life of a family member or a neighbor after a disaster.
Check your home, property or workplace for any hazards and get rid of them to reduce the risk of accidents when SHTF.
This includes checking for plumbing leaks or damaged windows and conducting the necessary repairs.
Aside from natural disasters, disaster preparedness should also consider man-made disasters. Know what to do during explosions, along with other emergencies such as chemical, biological, or nuclear threats.
Knowing what to do when SHTF is a crucial part of prepping and can make all the difference when you are dealing with an emergency.
Having bug-out bags at home or car emergency kits in your vehicle can help save your life if you ever get stranded in your car or have to be self-sufficient at home or work until help arrives.
While things are “normal,” try to teach your non-prepper neighbors or family members about the benefits of prepping to help them prepare for different emergencies.
