An electromagnetic pulse (EMP) is a broadband burst of electromagnetic energy. This massively powerful wave can potentially damage almost all electronic devices within hundreds of miles.
Before SHTF, learn about the 15 things you need to do after an EMP attack. (h/t to TheSurvivalMom.com)
An EMP attack can last for several weeks or months, so you need to prepare for a life without the power grid and a lot of permanently damaged electronics.
In a post-EMP world, many communities will eventually learn how to devise new and better systems since old ones may no longer be needed or wanted. (Related: SHTF tips: How to survive an EMP attack that brings down the power grid.)
Make the most of your free time and prepare before SHTF by:
Even if you’re not a hardened soldier, as a prepper you have many advantages that will help you survive when disaster strikes.
For example, your experience has taught you how to recognize warning signs that will help you take proactive steps to prepare. It’s also easy to incorporate both the mindset and lifestyle of preparedness into your daily life.
You will need to learn on the fly, quickly adapt and improvise and be ready to team up with others to form communities.
Prepare before it’s too late and remember these 15 things you need to do after an EMP attack.
Before disaster strikes, stock up on these 14 survival essentials.
Blankets and warm clothes
If you experience an EMP in the summer, you don’t need to worry about heating. But if the attack happens during winter, you will need blankets and warm clothing.
Stock up on heavy blankets, sleeping bags and warm winter clothing.
Books
Books might seem less important compared to the other items on this list, but you will need books as reference materials or for entertainment when the internet goes down during an EMP.
Bullets and firearms
Bullets and guns are impervious to an EMP, but make sure you don’t keep them in a safe with an electronic pad since it won’t work after an EMP attack.
Candles
If you run out of batteries for flashlights, use candles as a light source.
Cash
When the grid goes down, you won’t be able to use your credit or debit cards. If you have emergency cash on hand, you can still buy supplies.
Food
Since your refrigerator and freezer will be affected by an EMP, it’s best to stock up on foods with a long shelf life and items that don’t require freezing or refrigeration. This includes beans, canned meat and vegetables, energy bars, flour, peanut butter and white rice.
Lighters
You’ll need lighters and lighter fluid so you can light your candles and start fires for cooking or staying warm.
Personal hygiene items
Stock up on hygiene essentials like deodorant, soap, shampoo, razors, hand sanitizer, toothpaste, laundry detergent, dishwashing soap and baking soda.
Solar panels
With solar panels, you can power smaller items even after an EMP attack.
Stove
With a stove, you can cook food and stay warm. Make sure you also have a wood cook stove and lots of firewood.
Toilet paper
If you don’t have running water, you will need toilet paper to wipe yourself clean.
Tools
Basic, non-electronic tools will still work and be very useful following an EMP. Make sure you have essential tools like axes, knives, hammers, nails, saws, screwdrivers, screws and wrenches.
Trash bags
When SHTF, you can use trash bags for more than sanitation. You can use a trash bag as a makeshift poncho or for storing food and water.
Water
You may lose access to running water after an EMP attack. Stock up on clean water so you have enough for drinking, cooking, cleaning, cooking and hygiene.
Alternatively, you can set up a rainwater catchment system as a backup.
