As a prepper, it’s always worth considering unusual sources of survival tools and supplies. For example, a woman’s purse often contains items with amazing survival uses, such as elastic hair ties and hand sanitizer.
Before SHTF, learn more about these seven useful items women usually carry in their purses. (h/t to TruePrepper.com)
Bobby pins are commonly used to keep your hair out of your face. But if you practice a lot, you can use bobby pins to pick locks during an emergency.
Buy a clear lock and learn how to pick it using some bobby pins to get a basic idea of how locks work.
When SHTF, you can use a mirror for signaling and fire starting. If you are bugging out and are worried that you are being followed, you can also use a handheld mirror to look around corners without exposing yourself.
As a bonus, the case on makeup mirrors provides some protection for fragile glass.
However, if you are worried about the case being too bulky or the mirror breaking inside your bug-out bag, a flat survival mirror may be a better choice. A signal mirror is usually smaller, lighter and more durable.
Think of an elastic hair tie as an elastic version of a paracord. You can use hair ties to tightly close open bags or as cordage.
Hand sanitizer has several prepping uses. It can be used to remove stains in clothing and glue residue.
Hand sanitizer can also be used for firestarting since it has a high amount of alcohol.
You can also use hand sanitizer to keep your hands clean, Maintaining proper hygiene is important even after SHTF. (Related: Stealthy prepping: Concealing your stockpile in plain sight.)
Lip balm contains wax, which is a useful substance for various prepping needs.
Like hand sanitizer, lip balm can be used as a makeshift firestarter. Since most lip balms are made from greasy ingredients such as oils or waxes, you can apply some lip balm to cotton balls.
Apply an open flame to the waxy cotton ball to start a fire.
Menstrual pads or sanitary pads are flammable and absorbent, making them useful for firestarting in an emergency.
You can also use a clean pad for first aid and as a wound dressing.
Like menstrual pads, tampons are also absorbent.
You can use a clean tampon to filter large sediment out of water. It can also be used as fire kindler.
